North Carolina is home to more than its fair share of people who want to see their Christian god running our government -- people like Chuck Taylor, who's happy to thump a Bible if it'll cover his sorry tracks of graft and greed. So I especially enjoyed this exchange reported on DailyKos, between a law professor and a Maryland state senator.
Jamie Raskin is a law professor at American University who was called to testify in the Maryland legislature on a proposed marriage amendment. Poor Senator Nancy Jacobs, you almost have to feel sorry for her, made the mistake of blurting out this priceless gem to Raskin:
"Mr. Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that?"
To which the professor replied:
"Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You didn't place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible."
I've never heard it said better. Of course, people like Charles Taylor probably had their fingers crossed when they took their oaths of office. God knows they don't give a shit about the Constitution unless they can twist it to serve their culture of corruption.
